Abstract

In the following paper, some reflections are presented on two currents of Latin American economic and social thought regarding regional economic integration, namely: i- the thought of ECLAC, with emphasis on the ideas developed by Raúl Prebisch and its subsequent evolution; ii- the Marxist theory of dependency, with genesis in the approaches of Ruy Mauro Marini. In this sense, various considerations about the models of regional economic integration associated with each aspect presented, their evolution and effective materialization in regional organizations are raised in historical perspective: MERCOSUR and ALBA, respectively. The controversy surrounding the models stems from topics such as competition or cooperation, the role of the leader or paymaster in the process, and the impact of integration on economic development policy. This compilation is part of a broader research project, of a comparative nature, which will incorporate the gathering of some empirical evidence and stylized facts to draw conclusions about the alternatives of ongoing regional integration projects and their respective material forms of international organization
